A Candidate’s Cheat Sheet to Conferences: NFT.NYC Edition
Over the past two years, navigating through a global pandemic of city closures and social distancing has solidified that at the core of it all – people are social beings thriving for human interaction.
During that time, the growth of Web3 has been exponential. Relationships and companies existed remotely and online. This nascent community hungered for real life interaction. Now, conferences are back, and back with a bang.
In the past few months we’ve had EthDenver, Permissionless, Consensus, EthCC, and Devcon5 to name a few. Those were just the beginning. As attendance rates for crypto conferences have skyrocketed across the globe over the last year, how do you choose which to attend?
We wanted to break down how to approach picking a conference to attend and how to maximize your time there as a candidate looking to transition to Web3.
Since NFT.NYC is next week, we figured that would be the perfect place to start. As always, we recommend doing your own research but here’s our take on it.
NFT.NYC has become the premier conference for the NFT community. As is true of most of the conferences, the who’s who of crypto and Web3 will be there.
The 4th Annual NFT Industry Event takes place in Times Square, NYC, across 7 locations, June 20-23, 2022. There are over 1500 guest speakers, 300 sponsors, and endless satellite events.
Like any conference, review their page – https://www.nft.nyc/ and determine what you’re trying to achieve by attending the conference.
With the expansive list of events to attend, preparation is critical to maximize your experience. Let’s take a quick look at what you can do ahead of time.
BEFORE THE CONFERENCE
It’s been said that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Good thing, preparation can create opportunities for you at conferences – both planned and organic. It is incredibly important to come in with a game plan. Sit down and take a moment to figure out what your main goal at NFT.NYC is.
A way to approach thinking about this may be when you’re flying back home, what do you consider success at the conference?
Once you know your goal, center your conference strategy around that and create your target lists.
What are your top 10 sponsors that cater to your goals? Review their pages, the open roles at their companies, and how they speak to your professional background.
Who are your top 10 guest speakers that will help you achieve your goals? Research their career progression, read their content, follow their twitter and other social media pages.
Map your schedule around your selection.
Introductory chats or meetings add the most value to growing your professional network and generating opportunity leads. However, they require the most effort beforehand as setting up coffee chats during conferences will be difficult.
Leverage the communities you’re already in on Discord, Telegram, and/or LinkedIn along with following relevant Twitter pages. Engage with the community and let them know that you’ll be at the event and looking to build meaningful professional relationships there.
Keep the messages short and authentic. Keep it you! The message can be as simple as, “Hey, I’m going to my first conference NFT.NYC and looking to meet degens like myself. Would love to link up and grab a coffee if you have time!!”
Use hashtags. People actually respond…. #NFTNYC #NFTNYC2022 #web3 #NFTcommunity #ReallyTheyDoWork #SeriouslyTheyDo
Nothing scheduled? That’s okay. Stack your guest speakers and booth visits in the front and use your open time at the end for the coffee chats. You might need to hustle during your first days to make it happen!
Scheduling → Give Room for the Organic
Meaning, let your time at conferences breathe. Give yourself time in between booth visits and guest speakers to meet people. For those coffee breaks, whiskey breaks, or even those couch breaks in the Marriott lobby. That’s where you’ll find the hidden opportunities to meet great people.
No one ever had a meaningful conversation at a movie theater. Same goes with speaking engagements. But hang out in the parking lot afterwards…and it’s a gold mine.
AT THE CONFERENCE
You did the prepwork and your playbook is solid. It’s game time! Have fun but remember that each piece of the conference plays a different role.
Walk the Field
Before your hustle starts, arrive early. Check-in. Explore the lay of the land and take in your new environment. Get comfortable. This is your playground for a week. Go find the fun rides.
Where’s all the action? Where does everyone congregate at? Where’s the free coffee?
Be prepared with a high level understanding of the sponsor’s business model or mission. If there is a roster, research their backgrounds.
Come ready to express interest in the company and to have a few questions to ask them. Let them know your intent.
Make a connection that makes the most sense: LinkedIn, Twitter, Telegram, Discord, etc.
Guest Speaker Events
These events provide a pulse into the current state of the Web3 space. When you’re there, listen with intent and be an active participant. That’s the beauty of today’s world; social media provides that platform.
Tag your guest speaker on Twitter and utilize your key hashtags to live tweet your experience and thoughts about the guest speakers while they are speaking. This grows your personal brand and growth into the community and may yield responses from others.
OUTSIDE THE CONFERENCE
What separates NFT.NYC from the herd is the conference’s ability to build community outside of the conference. Countless events, in all forms, are happening throughout the week catering to all niches in the NFT space; from art, film, gaming, to fashion and even legal.
These events create the ideal environment for conversations and building relationships. Imagine the conference as working hours where people scramble from one event to another; and the Satellite events as the happy hour after work where people truly get to know each other.
Many are thrown by established names in our space such as Bored Ape Yacht Club, Polygon, and of course – Stardust.
If you’re interested in any of our events, feel free to check them out – Stardust Gallery
At the end of the day, you’ll set goals for yourself, meet great people along the way, and have an exciting experience. The most important thing is to have fun! We’re hitting milestones and making history. So breathe it all in and exhale good vibes and memories.
We know you are probably slammed with all your prep work so we’ve summed it up for you.
- Be prepared
- Know who you want to see and speak to
- Make time for organic experiences
- Booths and guest speaking events aren’t the best for relationships
- Relationships are built at outside events and “coffee” chats
- Most importantly #HaveFun
