How to Set Yourself up for Success in a Web3 Company
2021 set the stage for the mass emergence of Web3. As with any shift in technology and the arrival of a new industry there comes an influx of terms and information, as well as a myriad of lessons to accompany them. Here are some lessons to help navigate the world of Web3.
Find a teacher not a teller.
As Web3 and crypto continue to unfold in what feels like real time, there is an endless amount of information to learn. It is highly likely that each question will lead to an answer that will then lead to more questions. This is true for veterans and newcomers alike. It is critical that you find those that are willing to teach and not just tell.
What’s the difference? A teller will be concrete and inflexible with their answers to questions. This takes away from the excitement of blockchain, a technology in its infancy, where many answers are not final. There is a massive opportunity to mold the future of blockchain and a mentor should see this.
A teacher will give you the opportunity to discuss questions, pushback where statements don’t sit right and serve as a guide to the foundational truth. This is where the pursuit of the future exists. Finding a teacher is key to growing your understanding and ability to have a career in this space.
Lean into your experiences.
The majority of people most likely do not have direct career experience with crypto, blockchain, NFTs or anything else finding itself under the encompassing Web 3.0 umbrella. That’s perfectly okay. Instead of shying away from this exciting space, leverage your existing knowledge when looking for a new role. With the rate of growth in Web 3.0, companies are no longer just looking for engineers. There is a need for marketers, sales, operations and human resources. Lean into your previous experience.
As mentioned earlier, blockchain is in its infant stage. This is really important to keep in mind. No one knows fully what the future will look like in this space, but that’s what makes it so engaging. A willingness to learn is one of the most important factors. While absorbing all the new information, remember to trust your instincts and previous experiences.
Great leadership continues to matter.
It is safe to say that in no matter what career field, leadership matters. Great leaders will motivate, support and uplift their contingents. Finding great leadership is rare and once found, hold on tight. They provide a space that allows for growth beyond just the company but for the personal growth of employees as well.
Great leadership is triple important when venturing into uncharted waters. Web3 is being defined daily and mistakes are part of building something new. A great leader understands that mistakes are inevitable, but will work to help a company and its employees learn and grow from the mistakes in a supportive and constructive manner.
Web3 is a journey full of incredibly smart, humble, and creative people striving to build something novel.
